Do you have a positive or negative body image?
What’s it like to live in your body?
Do you compare yourself to the external images on TV, social media, in magazines, and billboards?
Are you really happy with the image you see every day reflected in the mirror?
Or, despite the size of your jeans, do you realize that you are your most beautiful and authentic self? This of course, is the goal!
Reality shows, music videos, and Hollywood, in general, have created an image of what beauty is that is so far from realistic; only about 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media. Consequently, Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape.
Poor Body Image isn’t limited to only women: surveys on male body image found that 20% – 40% of men were unhappy with some aspect of their looks, including physical appearance, weight, and muscle size and tone.
At Kohlanta Body Image, we are here to help you Love The Skin You’re In.
Body image is the way that you feel about your body and the way that you believe others see you. If you have a healthy body image – like the 5% of women mentioned above, that’s great. But Kohlanta Body Image is here for those of the 91% whose negative body image will lead to low self-esteem.
If you are struggling with a negative body image, consider these things:
While beautiful, your body isn’t a piece of art. It is functional. Celebrate all of the amazing things your body does for you—running, dancing, breathing, laughing, dreaming, etc. Consider all that you do every day. Your body is responsible for getting you there. It literally does the heavy lifting. Be thankful for all that your body does for you!
Focus on the positive. None of us is an ogre, so there is something that you can find that you like about your body. Whether it’s your long, shapely legs, your naturally thick hair, or your rare gray eyes, find something. As a matter of fact, create a list of 10 things that you like about your body and refer to it often! Look on TV or in magazines for ads that highlight specific body parts. Lotion and Jewelry commercials often feature hand models. Yes, that is a thing!
Surround yourself with people who genuinely love you. It is a boost of self-esteem and self-worth when you have people around you who appreciate your natural gifts and talents. When you are feeling good about the things that you can do, your perception of yourself increases as well.
